Following its announcement of new Partners earlier this month, Freehills has appointed seven senior lawyers to the new position of Executive Counsel, a role developed by the firm in response to some lawyers wanting an alternative career path.  It has also appointed nine new Special Counsel.

Executive Counsel will play an adjunct-leadership function within the firm, with a particular focus on people and team leadership, legal and practice management, client relationships, and project management. Special Counsel is a distinct role for lawyers who have industry leading recognition in highly specialised legal areas.

Freehills Chief Executive and Managing Partner, Gavin Bell said Freehills’ new Executive Counsel reflected the talent and diversity of the firm, with a mix of people across offices and practice groups.

‘We see the role as a vital key in ensuring that we keep our talented people, allowing a variety of options for career fulfilment,’ Mr Bell said.

‘There are different reasons why senior lawyers have applied for this position, but all of them have shown they have the outstanding legal and personal qualities required.’

Mr Bell said the new Executive Counsel were some of the most experienced Senior Associates and Special Counsel from Litigation, Banking & Finance and Corporate practice groups.

‘This role will allow them to make a meaningful contribution to the leadership of the firm without taking on all the responsibilities of partnership,’ he said.

‘The leadership and business management functions of Executive Counsel will help practices run even more effectively, ultimately enhancing the firm’s exceptional service to clients.’

Executive Counsel appointments include from Melbourne, Joanna Taylor and Neil Jack, from Sydney Melanie Bouton and Anne Clarke, from Brisbane, Mary Boittier, Perth, Anthony Di Biase and Singapore, Andrea Wookey. Special Counsel appointments include Harshane Kahagalle, Michelle Keen, Jinny Chaimungkalanont, Alex Scott, Madeline Simpson, Elizabeth Ferrier, Patrick Sands, Kon Tsiakis and Jau-Shi Liew.

‘I congratulate all Freehills’ new Executive Counsel and Special Counsel and thank them for their ongoing contribution to the success of the firm,’ Mr Bell said.
