John is a partner in Freehills’ Employee Relations practice.
John has over 30 years’ experience in all aspects of industrial relations and employment law across many industries, acting for Australian and International companies. His work includes strategic workplace relations advice, employment and industrial litigation before courts and tribunals throughout Australia, senior executive appointment, remuneration and contractual matters, corporate fraud and corporate governance.
Experience
In recent years, John has had a significant role in the Federal Government’s reforms of the Australian building & construction industry, including representing various companies in the Cole Royal Commission into the building & construction industry, representing the Australian Building & Construction Commission and assisting many employers to understand the reforms and to develop strategies to implement the necessary changes in their workplaces.
John is actively involved in assisting employers to implement changes to their workplace arrangements following legislative changes introduced by the past and current Federal Governments.
Throughout his career, John has worked closely with companies in a diverse range of industry sectors including retail, transport, building, finance, logistics, manufacturing and professional services. He has assisted them in developing strategies to manage often complex employment, board and executive and industrial relations matters arising in the workplace.
Professional background
John joined Freehills in 1977 and holds both Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics degrees from Melbourne’s Monash University.
He contributes to the American Bar Association publication International Labor and Employment Laws, Employee Share Plans, International Legal and Tax Issues by Globe Business Publishing and The Littler Mendelson Guide to International Employment and Labor Law.
John is consistently recognised as a leader in his field and regularly appears in respected international legal guides such as Chambers Global Guide, PLC Which Lawyer?, Who’s Who Legal, The Asia Pacific Legal 500 and AsiaLaw Leading Lawyers.
John is an associate of both CPA Australia and Chartered Secretaries Australia and is a chartered member of the Australian Human Resources Institute.
