Recruitment Process - Graduate Program

Our recruitment process involves a number of opportunities for you to get to know us and for us to find out more about you.

All the information we learn about you is combined and carefully considered when assessing your suitability for a graduate position with Freehills. While the process can vary slightly from office to office, your recruitment experience with Freehills will typically involve the following:

1. Submit your application through CVMail

You will need to submit an up-to-date resume, academic transcript and cover letter through CVMail during a predetermined application period. We have also listed a few short questions which will enable us to ascertain your interest in Freehills and in commercial law in general. It is important that you list all your academic results pertaining to the application, including additional degrees. You should be able to demonstrate that you can work effectively in a team and have a practical, problem-solving approach to your work.  Don’t forget that we want to know all about you - it isn’t just about your academics, as all your experiences are interesting to us.

Please note, to be eligible to apply you must have the legal right to work in Australia on a permanent basis.

2. Completing the online assessment

We always receive a higher number of quality applications than positions available. We do not want to make our selections for interviews based solely on your written application and academic transcript. We realise that you are more than just a piece of paper, hence why we have introduced a psychological assessment which allows us to understand how you prefer to work. Our aim is to identify those people likely to develop into outstanding commercial lawyers and this assessment provides us with additional information. Your responses to the questions will help us to determine if you would be suited to working for a commercial firm like Freehills, and whether at this stage in your career you would be suited to our graduate program.

We will let you know in advance what to expect from the psychological assessment and will offer you the opportunity to receive feedback regardless of whether or not you join Freehills.

3. Meet our people

The only way to get a first real taste of our culture is by meeting our lawyers in an informal setting. Chat with our graduates, junior and senior lawyers over a glass or two, ask all the questions the brochures can’t answer and find out what it is really like to work at Freehills. These events vary in each state, but can include a tour of our offices, an information evening, and social events such as a cocktail party.

4. Interview/s with Freehills Partners

You will be interviewed by one of our Graduate Recruitment Partners. The interview provides a chance for you to learn more about the firm and understand the types of work you may be involved in. They’ll ask you questions based on your OPQ results, work experiences, extra-curricular activities and interests. The interview is a two-way process: we want to know as much about you as you want to know about us, so come prepared with an understanding of all your experiences to date and how you think Freehills is the right place for you.

5. Offer

The day you have been waiting for! Our partners will call you with an offer to join us as a graduate.
